We just built our children a desk.
The best hope for their return to school this fall is a hybrid of school and home. For the last few months of school we used an ad-hoc and imperfect system of the dinning room table, my desk, and a small table we brought down from upstairs. But, if one more child moves my things and junks up my desk I’m going to lose my mind.
Enter, The Behemoth

I’m not sure if you can tell from the photo, but this desk is 8 feet long. There are saw horses on the end, which do detract from the foot space, but add stability. The desk top is two 2x10s screwed together. This desk cost us just under $30 and an entire weekend of work. But, it is much sturdier than any other desk I considered for my children, the cheapest of which was $60 and looked like it would last a week with these kids.
We spent all day Sunday rearranging the room to accommodate this new workspace. In the end we removed a small bookshelf, but the room feels much more open and spacious.
I never thought I would be (a) making something new just for this house and (b) rearranging this room AGAIN. But, the pandemic has changed more than just our plans. Everyone’s lives are in disarray.
Small comfort, but a comfort none the less.
