Day Nine

Posted on June 14, 2019February 1, 2021 by Gwen Shaneck

Today I noticed…how loud the birds are are 5:30 in the morning. They are deafening. It’s like the birds that nest in the tree outside my window are having a loudness contest. They can wake me from a dead sleep with a fan on. Sometimes, like this morning, they can wake me through the closed window. It’s amazing. But, I wouldn’t change it. I love the birds. The trucks? The guys who air brake down the hill? The ridiculous train engineer who doesn’t have to blow his horn, because there are no train crossings within 15 miles of my house, but he blows it for a solid ten minutes? Don’t love him. Don’t love waking up at 5:50 despite the closed windows, the blaring white noise, and the heat in the winter. People like that get under my skin. It’s so awful and annoying. And, it feels deliberate. Maybe he’s just bored at 5:50 in the morning and likes to hit his horn, maybe he knows someone and he’s saying hi? But, he’s on my list. And, you don’t want to be on that list.

The train is interesting. If we move again, I don’t want to be near a train line. When we lived in the Twin Cities we could hear the trains in the switching yard. It wasn’t far from our apartment and you could hear them idling and moving. When we moved here, we didn’t realize that the line is literally a 1/4 mile from our house. It hasn’t happened in a while, but trains used to sit, idling, outside one of our neighbor’s homes for hours. Just running the very loud engine, which at our house was annoying, at theirs was unbearable. But, I guess they have found another place to idle, or they’ve fixed the tunnel or added to the lines? Who knows what they’ve done. I just know that the noise situation is better. Except for that dude at 5 am.

What is this place?

Welcome to my little place in the internet. I write about my family and what it’s like to suddenly find myself homeschooling my four children – including a high schooler and two middle schoolers during COVID-19. I also spend some time writing about writing and how I am trying to get more of it in my life.
