My Top Five Favorite Podcasts

Posted on September 19, 2019September 21, 2019 by Gwen Shaneck

I love podcasts.

Here are some of my favorite, the ones where, when they release a new episode, I stop what I am currently listening to and turn it on. Or, the ones that I savor, finding a time when I can listen without kids and interruptions.

The Satellite Sisters (Julie, Liz, and Lian Dolan): I heard the Liz on an episode of Happier a few years ago. Liz Craft talked about how much she loved the Satellite Sisters radio show. But, I didn’t listen to an episode. It wasn’t until late 2018 that I finally listened and I’m glad I did. They are now my favorite podcast, bar none. I’ve gone back and listened to years and years of past episodes (they go back almost 17 years!). I love the sister perspective of Julie, Liz, and Lian and they creep into my daily conversation. “Well, Julie says…”, “When Liz did….”, “Lian thought…” are things that frequently comes out of my mouth! (New episodes release on Tuesdays)

The Happier Podcast with Gretchen Rubin and Liz Craft: Like the Sat. Sisters I resisted this show for a while figuring that I didn’t need to listen to a self-help guru’s podcast. Well, what can I say? I love it. I went back and listened to their entire catalog when I started and I look forward to Wednesday when they release their new episodes.

Happier in Hollywood with Liz Craft and Sara Fain: This is a spin off podcast put on by Liz and her friend and writing partner Sara. It’s a really fun podcast and seems much more loosely structured than Happier. It’s fun to get a new perspective on Liz as a professional and I have to say, she does seem just a touch more “real” on this podcast. (Although, I think she’s more herself recently on happier as well) It is fun, insightful, and never boring.

By the Book with Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg: This is a hilarious podcast where Kristen and Jolenta follow self-help books for two weeks to see how their lives have changed. I find myself frequently laughing out loud to this podcast and love their quirky takes on the books, life, and their husbands.

True Crime Obsessed with Gillian Pensavalle and Patrick Hinds: This is a funny recap show about true-crime documentaries. I don’t listen to them all (sometimes the topics are just too hard) and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of the documentaries that they’ve covered, but they are hilarious! Seriously. Patrick has the best laugh ever. And Gillian? I want to be her friend. She’s so funny.

What is this place?

Welcome to my little place in the internet. I write about my family and what it’s like to suddenly find myself homeschooling my four children – including a high schooler and two middle schoolers during COVID-19. I also spend some time writing about writing and how I am trying to get more of it in my life.
